| So when I replaced the stereo in the pearl convertible, I went with an Alpine head unit and an Alpine PDX-5 Class D amp. I picked the amp mainly because it would fit under the seat and (supposedly) had the power to drive my door speakers and my subs all in one amp. (Infiniti speakers, 2 Kicker Solobaric 8" subs). Well I was never really happy with the sound. Seems like the amp was always running flat out, and lacked a little punch especially with the top down. So for the SlickTTop I ordered a Kenwood head unit (KDS-x796) and I found and old school Rockford Fosgate 801x (old inefficient class A/B) on Ebay. I needed to test the 801x, so I dropped it into the VerTT and ran the door speakers on one side and bridged the other side to the subs. Bottom line: Night and freakin' day! Punch is back, and there in plenty of headroom. The gain is set at around 50 percent. I know that Fosgate amps are traditionally deliver above-nameplate power and that the Infinity Kappas are a pretty power hungry speaker. But still, theoretically, the Class D should be "better", but the old Fosgate sounds wayyyy better to me. Anyone else have this happen? I am just getting too old for the new stuff? :-)
